On Sunday, October 26, 2025, at 3:00 p.m., St. Peter’s Church in Bacharach am Rhein will become a special venue: The Heinrich Heine Choir of Frankfurt, together with actress Katharina Bach of the Münchner Kammerspiele and musician Gregor Praml on double bass and loops, will present the literary-musical performance “The Remorse of Prometheus.”

Through a captivating blend of songs, choral pieces, texts, and improvisations, a powerful work of art emerges that poses the big questions of our time: What does romanticism mean in an era of climate crisis? Is it an escape into a dreamland, or can it be a source of strength to sing out against the destruction of our future?

The program combines romantic melodies by Schumann, Mendelssohn, and Brahms with texts by Svetlana Alexievich, Philipp Blom, and Peter Sloterdijk. Katharina Bach recites Bert Brecht and reads about nuclear-contaminated clouds over Chernobyl or the manipulation of clouds through “cloud seeding.” Gregor Praml’s double bass loops create a unique soundscape that oscillates between subtle poetry and furious sonic experimentation. Highlights include the arrangement of “Sinnerman”: at times a spoken-word performance brimming with rage, at other times a choral variation, and finally a haunting chorale posing the question, “Where shall we run when everything is burning?”

The blend is unique: Heine meets Dylan, Schumann encounters Nina Simone, Brahms crosses paths with Brecht, and Pete Seeger with Hubert von Goisern. “The Remorse of Prometheus” is a wake-up call, an artistic indictment, but at the same time a celebration of the beauty of language and music.
