BaKaLoNi – Wine-tasting strolls will continue in 2020 as well!

Following last year’s wine-tasting walks, which drew more than 300 enthusiastic residents, the four municipalities of Bacharach, Kaub, Lorch, and Niederheimbach intend to build on this successful concept and continue to foster community interaction through BaKaLoNi in 2020 as well.

To this end, the four municipalities once again utilized the event format of a guided tour lasting approximately 1.5 hours. Led by the respective mayor and featuring three local wines, the tour allowed participants not only to explore the local sights but also to enjoy the region’s finest wines in the World Heritage Valley. With support from their tourism organizations in planning and promotion, the municipalities once again devised new program content for their “Schlenderwein” tastings.

Niederheimbach will kick off the tour on Sunday, March 8, 2020, and, led by Mayor Ole Wysotzki, will guide the group along the Fairy Tale Trail up to the castle nursery. From there, the route continues past the Pantheon to the banks of the Rhine, where a ferry ride accompanied by music is sure to be another highlight of the tour.

The following Sunday, March 15, 2020, Bacharach will once again host an interesting wine-tasting stroll. With the support of Fritz Stüber (Bacharach Beautification Association) and the team from Rhein-Nahe Touristik, World Heritage tour guide Gerhard Becker will visit several “fortified,” a few “picturesque,” and numerous “artistically” designed spots in the medieval wine town under the motto “On the Wall, on the Lookout.”

The third “Schlenderwein” wine tasting will take place on Sunday, March 22, 2020, in Kaub, when Mayor Martin Buschfort will explain to guests the significance of roofing slate mining in his community over the past decades. During the guided tour, participants will explore both a mining tunnel—which now serves as a wine cellar—and the Wilhelm-Erbstollen roofing slate mine, which was once the largest mine on the Middle Rhine.

The final—but no less interesting—wine-tasting stroll will take place on Sunday, March 29, 2020, in Lorch, when Mayor Ivo Reßler will welcome guests at the historic Hilchenhaus. From there, the city tour will lead past the Catholic Church of St. Martin and up to the geological loop trail above Lorch. Along the 1.2-kilometer loop trail, participants will not only learn about the region’s geological features but also about their significance for viticulture and the taste of the wine.

Guests and residents are cordially invited to all four Schlenderwein tastings. The events are free of charge, but a small donation is appreciated. We recommend using public transportation to get there and back, as all locations are easily accessible by bus, train, and ferry.
